Psalm-88-2-web-clear-bkg.png

Do you long for a closer walk with Christ? Do his words “Abide in me, and I in you” speak to a deep need within you? We simply cannot have this deep, abiding relationship to which Christ is calling us with only a 5-minute daily devotional and a little Bible reading. As with any relationship, you must invest time to truly get to know Christ and his love for you. You must abide (await, remain, lodge, sojourn, dwell) with Him letting His life-giving energy flow into your life.

ABIDE - a-bid’ - Old English word signifying progressively to “await,” “remain,” “lodge,” “sojourn,” “dwell,” “continue,” “endure”
— Oxford English Dictionary

Solitude and silence are the keys to abiding. But investing extended time completely alone with God can be intimidating (even for an introvert like me). It helps if we have a guide and some encouraging words from those who have walked this path before us. That’s why I want to share some of the treasures I’ve found hidden in plain sight within our church history–contemplative or meditative prayer being the foundation.

Coming away from the distractions of life is nothing new. God has been calling his special friends to invest extended 1-on-1 time with Him for millennia. Moses, Elijah, and others in the Old Testament and, of course, His own son, Jesus, needed frequent stretches of time alone with the Alone.

Likewise, what I am sharing is nothing new or original. In fact, we will be exploring ancient practices from our early Christian history and I will be quoting extensively from other writers who have helped me along my spiritual path. But, even though time alone with the Lord is nothing new and even though most of the ‘giants of faith’ testify to the efficacy, even necessity, of solitude and silence to nurture a true relationship with God not many of us actually practice it.

Like the woman who found her lost coin (Luke 15:8-9) I have found this treasure of the earlier church which has been lost to many of us present-day evangelical Christians. Having recovered this treasure for myself I want to celebrate by sharing it with others. This website is your invitation to the celebration!
